Average Practice Speeds: Atlanta 2

Segment III has is almost here with the same prices as last segment (kind of a bummer because Johnson would have been super cheap if they would have changed them). Harvick is still pretty much off-limits for me unless there are a lot of low-dollar drivers that could do well.

Not much to go off of this week because every practice was ran before qualifying. In practice one (which lasted two hours), most teams worked on their race setup, trying to perfect their car for Sunday night. In the second practice (only 45 minutes), most teams ran only a handful of laps, working on qualifying. Only Johnson, Keselowski, Burton, Logano, and McMurray ran laps in the double digits.

Top 5 for Practice One:
1. Kasey Kahne
2. Kurt Busch
3. Clint Bowyer
4. Jeff Burton
5. Denny Hamlin

Top 5 for Practice Two (wouldn't put much emphasis on these):
1. Ryan Newman
2. Carl Edwards
3. Juan Montoya
4. David Ragan
5. Clint Bowyer

Average speeds are calculated by taking the average speed of each driver in each practice and multiplying it by the number of laps ran. When you do this for each practice and add the two totals together, and then divide by the total number of laps ran, you get a pretty good indicator on who has a fast car. On tracks like Atlanta in the past, those who are high on the average speed chart usually finish up front.

1. Denny Hamlin @ 177.069 mph over 53 laps
2. Carl Edwards @ 176.160 mph over 61 laps
